Egger's Furniture, redecorating redo for less. November 2010.
With the Holidays coming... it’s time to think about decorating to be ready for a lot of entertaining at home. A beautiful house does not have to mean a mansion filled with expensive furniture. It can mean a cozy cottage, a spacious loft, or a charming apartment with a fun personality. The key to a beautiful home is that it reflects the personalities of those who live there. Here are a few quick and easy redecorating ideas from the interior design staff at Egger's.
CLEAR OUT THE ROOM AND PLAY WITH IDEAS. Dust off those odd pieces and discover hidden gems you never appreciated. You might use them either in the room you’re refreshing or in other rooms around the house. Move things around and try something new with your existing accessories. Re-hang those pictures and mirrors. You might be surprised how much a little "re-movement" can accomplish.
ESTABLISH A FOCAL POINT. Every room should have a centerpiece. It can be the fireplace or a picture window with a great view. It can also be a piece of furniture, such as an armoire, a sofa or a large painting. In today’s home, the flat-screen TV and entertainment center may be the focal point for the family room.
REARRANGE THE FURNITURE. Imagine a large room with people in it. What makes sense? Create an extra seating area by moving seating away from the walls. Use approximately 10-12 feet as the maximum distance across the seating group. This is what interior designers call the "arc of conversation".
FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU NEED (and what you don't) Remove the items in your room that "date" your look or make the space uncomfortable. Replace only what you really need on a one-at-a-time basis to help stretch your decorating budget.
FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU WANT TO KEEP. Choose things that mean the most to you or look the best in the room. If there isn't a large piece of art that might be placed over the fireplace, sofa or console table, that may be one of the purchases you need to make. Colorful area rugs or an interesting throw blanket can be inexpensive wall hangings.
COLOR is one of the least expensive ways to transform a room. A fresh coat of paint in a soothing or exciting color chosen to work with your existing or new furniture can make all the difference. Remember, when you are buying paint it will cost no more to get bright exciting colors.
